The 70 Hour Dilemma

Infosys founder Narayan Murthy said “Unless we improve our work productivity, unless we reduce corruption in the government at some level, because we have been reading I don't know the truth of it, unless we reduce the delays in our bureaucracy in taking this decision, we will not be able to compete with those countries that have made tremendous progress. So therefore, my request is that our youngsters must say, this is my country, I’d like to work 70 hours a week”. But the Internet only picked up “70 Hours” and spread it like wildfire.

So why did all that he wanted to communicate and the context went to trash and just 70 hours become viral?

This Incident exposes two things to the world like never before.

  1. The large mass of people are already working for so much time and are seriously fed up of it or extremely unsatisfied about either the work or the pay.
  2. People are left with either no time or patience to check and understand the context of something that was said.

Or is it just that we have been working so much that the having the time and patience to understand the context sounds too much to expect and it has become the new normal?

This episode is not about what Narayan Murthy said or what he meant when said what he said or what he wants the youth to do. It is about the reality of one of the largest contributor to Indian Economy and its manforce faces everyday. It is about how much the reality is supressed that one statement given in genuine interest of the nation could have made a person like Narayan Murthy a slight villan atleast for a short period of time.
